GIDRM at the International Disaster and Risk Conference
The main topic of this year’s International Disaster and Risk Conference in Davos, Switzerland was “Integrative Risk Management – towards resilient Cities”. The Conference, organized by the Global Risk Forum, provided an opportunity for international experts working in disaster risk reduction to meet up and share information and experience. The Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM) was actively involved with an information booth as well as with thematic input. Mr. Olaf Handloegten, Head of the Management Unit of the Initiative, moderated the session “Resilience: New Approaches and Case Studies” as co-chair.
The Session served as a platform for experts and scientists to present new approaches and case studies on resilience issues and as an opportunity for a close interaction amongst participants. The key message of this session was: More motivation and commitment to invest is needed by both state and non-state actors, including civil society and private economy, in order to reduce disaster risk and enhance resilience. In summary, the conference focus was on concrete examples of such practices, a broad exchange of information and experiences as well as highlighting future challenges for an integrated approach to DRM.
